When managing a fever with chickenpox, medication choice is critical. Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is the preferred and safest option to reduce fever and alleviate pain. It is crucial to calculate the dose based on your child's weight, not just their age, and to adhere strictly to the dosing schedule to avoid overdose.
You should avoid giving Ibuprofen (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Studies have shown that using Ibuprofen during chickenpox can increase the risk of developing severe secondary bacterial skin infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis.
Beyond medication, focus on comfort measures. Ensure your child drinks plenty of clear fluids like water, diluted apple juice, or oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration. Ice pops are a great way to hydrate and soothe a sore mouth. For sponging, use lukewarm water and let it evaporate on the skin to provide a cooling effect. Never use cold water or rubbing alcohol, as this can cause shivering and can be absorbed through the skin, leading to toxicity. Dress them in light, loose clothing.
