Anthrax is more endemic in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South Asia, the Middle East, and some regions of Eastern Europe and Latin America, where livestock vaccination and meat inspection may be limited. Travelers can minimize risk by avoiding raw or undercooked meat, not handling animal hides, wool, or carcasses, and steering clear of sick or dead animals, especially in rural areas or markets. The anthrax vaccine is not recommended for routine travel and is generally reserved for people with high occupational risk; for most travelers, simple food safety, hygiene, and animal-contact precautions are sufficient.
