It’s not inevitable that all your children will get chickenpox, especially if the others are vaccinated or have had it before. However, because the virus spreads easily through airborne droplets and contact with blisters, quick precautions are important. Keep the infected child isolated in a separate, well-ventilated room until all blisters have crusted over. Encourage frequent handwashing, use separate towels, utensils, and bedding, and avoid shared toys or close contact. Clean surfaces, doorknobs, and toys with mild disinfectant or diluted bleach solution, and wash linens and clothes in hot water. If the other children are unvaccinated, talk to your doctor about post-exposure vaccination, which can still help prevent or lessen infection if given within 3–5 days of exposure.
