Recovery from post-polio syndrome (PPS) surgery can be long and demanding, often requiring a prolonged period of immobilization, non-weight-bearing, and casting to allow healing. Due to muscle weakness and deconditioning common in polio survivors, recuperation may take three to four times longer than usual. Extensive physical therapy is essential, focusing on gentle, non-fatiguing exercises to rebuild strength without overexertion. Respiratory support and prolonged observation immediately after surgery might be necessary due to increased risks like respiratory muscle weakness. Gradual return to activities with multidisciplinary rehabilitation tailored to individual needs improves outcomes, but fatigue and reduced endurance can persist. Careful management of rest, exercise, and assistive devices is crucial for functional recovery and avoiding secondary complications.
