Typhoid fever can be diagnosed using several tests, each with its strengths. The Widal test is commonly used and detects antibodies against Salmonella Typhi, but it can sometimes give false positives or negatives, especially in areas where typhoid is common. For more accurate and confirmatory diagnosis, blood cultures are considered the gold standard, as they detect the actual bacteria in the bloodstream. Other tests include stool cultures, urine cultures, and newer rapid diagnostic tests, which can support early detection. The good news is that with a combination of clinical evaluation and appropriate testing, typhoid can be reliably diagnosed, enabling timely and effective treatment.
