The standard typhoid vaccines, such as Typhim Vi and Typherix, protect only against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella Typhi and do not protect against paratyphoid fever, which is caused by Salmonella Paratyphi. Although both diseases are similar, they are caused by different bacteria, so separate protection is needed. Currently, there is no approved vaccine for paratyphoid fever, but combined typhoid–paratyphoid vaccines are being developed. Until then, the best prevention remains good hygiene, safe food and water habits, and sanitation practices, which help reduce the risk of both infections.
