Besides the vaccine, the best way to avoid Yellow Fever–carrying mosquito bites is to combine repellents, protective clothing, and physical barriers. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are proven to be the most effective and should be applied to exposed skin. Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and light-colored clothing helps reduce bites, especially during the day when Aedes mosquitoes are active. In high-risk areas, using mosquito nets, window screens, and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets adds strong protection, especially at night. Avoiding standing water and staying in well-screened or air-conditioned rooms further lowers the risk. A combination of these methods provides the highest level of safety.
